Instagram is testing Direct, a messaging app that replaces the current inbox

Instagram is testing a standalone app for private messages called Direct, a first step toward possibly toward removing messaging features from the core app. Direct, which opens to the camera in the same way Snapchat does, will become available on Android and iOS today in six countries: Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay. If you install Direct, the inbox disappears from the Instagram app and can only be accessed in the messaging app. If Instagram introduces Direct globally — it currently has no timeline for doing so — the move could give parent company Facebook a third popular messaging tool alongside Messenger and WhatsApp.
                                                         CLICK TO DOWNLOAD

Although it is officially only a test, Instagram’s rationale for building Direct app is that private messaging can never be a best-in-class experience when it lives inside an app meant for broadcasting publicly. “We want Instagram to be a place for all of your moments, and private sharing with close friends is an important part of that,” Hemal Shah, an Instagram product manager, told me. “Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own. We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app.”
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Facebook has undertake a transition like this before. In 2014, the company shut off messaging inside the flagship app, forcing users to download Messenger. “On mobile, each app can only focus on doing one thing well,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the time. “Asking folks to install another app is a short term painful thing, but if we wanted to focus on serving this [use case] well, we had to build a dedicated and focused experience.”
Direct was built according to similar logic. While direct messaging was originally an afterthought in Instagram, after multiple redesigns it had accumulated 375 million monthly users by April of this year, the company says. Its rise has coincided with the growth of Instagram stories, which encourage users to fire back quick replies to friends’ messages by adding a “send message” box underneath each one.
Now Instagram will see whether its tools for private messages can thrive on their own. There is reason to believe that they will: messaging apps have more aggregate users than social networks do, and some have speculated that growing cultural tensions are pushing more conversations from public forums to private groups. If messaging becomes a large, pseudo-independent pillar of Instagram, it could further entrench the app in the lives of its users while opening up significant new business opportunities.

Is Facebook "Thumbs Down" (Dislike) button is on its way?

One of the most requested features for Facebook could be moving a step closer to reality.
A new thumbs down emoji is one of a range of 'reactions' that have appeared on the Messenger app of some users of the site.
The apparent testing of the new feature fits with long-running speculation that a similar function for the main site may also be on the way.
The options include both a thumbs-up and thumbs-down icon, as well as symbols for love, laughter, shock, sadness and anger.

“We are always testing ways to make Messenger more fun and engaging. This is a small test where we enable people to share an emoji that best represents their feelings on a message”.
This first approachment to the possible change to come, added, to the five traditional icons we already know, a thumb down, which may be the closest we, Facebook users, will ever get to the acclaimed “dislike” button. However, the social media company sees this mythical Reaction more as a “no” button.
The app will show an emoji icon next to the bubble chat. The users will be able to decide between a “Love,” “Haha,” “Wow,” “Sad,” “Angry,” “Like” or thumbs-down. One of these can appear next to a message and let the other person understand, faster, how they feel about what it is being said.

Although tests are running, news are being shaken for the scoop, and people are already crazy of excitement, there’s still no guarantee we’ll be able to see the new feature this year, or ever. If we are being honest with ourselves, we are not completely sure calling an emoji on a private conversation counts accurately as a “Dislike button.”
At any rate, Facebook refers to the whole operation as a “small test,” and it seems they are not committed to a launch anytime soon -assuming, of course, the experiment goes forward. But, keeping in mind the huge success the Reactions had last year, and how much our hater hearts want to express how much they do not like an idea, we remain confident and hopeful to see this eventually.

How to protect yourself from Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that carries out the cryptoviral extortion attack from cryptovirology that blocks access to data until a ransom is paid and displays a message requesting payment to unlock it. Simple ransomware may lock the system in a way which is not difficult for a knowledgeable person to reverse. More advanced malware encrypts the victim's files, making them inaccessible, and demands a ransom payment to decrypt them. The ransomware may also encrypt the computer's Master File Table (MFT) or the entire hard drive. Thus, ransomware is a denial-of-access attack that prevents computer users from accessing files since it is intractable to decrypt the files without the decryption key. Ransomware attacks are typically carried out using a Trojan that has a payload disguised as a legitimate file.

While initially popular in Russia, the use of ransomware scams has grown internationally; in June 2013, security software vendor McAfee released data showing that it had collected over 250,000 unique samples of ransomware in the first quarter of 2013, more than double the number it had obtained in the first quarter of 2012. Wide-ranging attacks involving encryption-based ransomware began to increase through Trojans such as CryptoLocker, which had procured an estimated US$3 million before it was taken down by authorities, and CryptoWall, which was estimated by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to have accrued over $18m by June 2015.
Steps to be taken:

  1. Back up your files
  2. Be suspicious of emails, websites and apps
  3. Use an antivirus program
  4. Always install updates
  5. Never pay the ransom

Simply put: make sure your Microsoft Windows server is up to date. Microsoft issued a patch in mid-March to fix the hole in Windows 7 and other supported versions of Windows: Vista, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2, 8.1, Server 2012, RT 8.1, 10, Server 2012 R2, and Server 2016. But those who did not apply the software update were—and still are—left exposed to the hack.
In light of the attack, Microsoft rolled out patches to protect older versions of Windows that “no longer receive mainstream support” from the company like Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003. Those running on Windows 10 are fine, as their software is not vulnerable to this particular cyberattack. Devices that are potentially susceptible are Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, and earlier operating systems.
Microsoft recommends users upgrade to Windows 10 and install the security update MS17-010. With the 1.243.297.0 update, Windows Defender Antivirus detects the malware as Ransom:Win32/WannaCrypt. The company also recommends Device Guard for businesses and Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection for blocking emails carrying malware.
The U.S. Computers Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) issued advice on how users can best protect themselves from the recent WannaCry ransomware threat. In addition to being “particularly wary of compressed or ZIP file attachments,” CERT recommends using caution when clicking directly on links in email even if the sender is someone you know. They suggest trying to independently verify web addresses.
